    The soldier that died at about 2:18 in this scene , if you watch closely his eyes go to dilated & fixed in the daylight & that means passed away. I am former law enforcement agent & have seen that in real life , sad , sad moment . The folks behind the scenes did a good job on depicting that moment.

    Strange...Sgt Savage rallies surviving soldiers and calls for regular artillery support BUT why didnt the PAVN respond with their own artillery? Surely by then the 130mm M46 or Chinese Type 59 would have been available and could be transported down the Troung Son Trail and installed in sanctuaries in Cambodia hence used to counter US artillery and considering the 130mm has a faster ROF and a bigger payload and a much longer range than the US 105mm wouldnt they have done that?

  • @zhuangsaur227
    @zhuangsaur227 9 месяцев назад

    How come the PAVN did not use more artillery in Ia Drang? If in Dien Bien Phu the Viet Minh could pound out the French then surely by 1965 when the Troung Son Trail would have surely already have been used and in particular the 130mm M46 or Type 59 was able to outrange the US 105mm M101 and also with a fast ROF at 5 to 6 rpm on average plus if firing from sanctuaries from Cambodia or Laos wouldnt that have also nullified US artillery? Even with aircraft to rout out the cannons wouldnt the PAVN still have had strong AAA regardless even if they didnt have mobile SA2 Guidelines at that time...

    I really hope that Lt Herrick, as depicted in the movie wasn't that stupid in real life. He didn't die for his country, he died because he was chasing glory, and he led his men into an ambush. He was portrayed as a fool, and the worst kind of leader. Sgt Savage was a great leader. Thrust into a situation he was barely prepared for, the lives of his men dependent on him, and he rose to the occasion. And that's how he earned Sgt Maj Plumley's respect.

    Col. Nguyen Huu An was fearsome, as his tactics and strategies portrayed in the movie can be regarded as cunning and sharp. His troops had better advantage in number of soldiers, had skills in camouflage, movement, shooting and willing to sacrifice. But that advantage was not enough comparing to Americans: they had more advanced weapons, technologies, modern warfare vehicles ( helicopters carrying troops directly to the field, medic supplies always ready on hand, soldiers are better equipped ). Still he managed to drive back American attacks, utilize existing geographical areas unbeknownst to enemy and leverage the enemy's fear ( by encouraging his soldiers, ordering his capable underlings to lead the right attack at right time ). He knew the consequence of such tactics was high rate of casualties, but it was the only way for his army to push back the far better equipped enemy. The VA at that time, even in history, suffered field supply deprivation, including lacked of rations, medicine, maintenance equipments, ammunition,... so time was mattered to the VA, the faster and beforehand they got before the enemy; the higher the chances they got to win a bttle. They could rely on sympathized civilian in most cases; but as the film demonstrated battle at an unoccupied hill; this strategy simply cannot be implemented. So they went with the first and the most realistic tactic: outweigh the US force in mind games, exploit knowledge of battlefield... all for the sake of ending the battle as soon as possible; so not to put the VA to disadvantages in later stages of the battle Col Huu An also realized another dilemma of American side: US force were formidable, yet the hill; which was previously occupied by US force, left abandoned right after the end of the battle. The cycle of reoccupied happened once again, as he stated that this war is a vicious circle of repeated events, and the winning side of the war will be the side that had the most patience. The patience of battle-hardened soul sheered determination of uniting the nation vs the patience of the strongest economy and leading technology. What a bright guy.

    We Were Soldiers isn't the greatest in terms of accuracy but I do like that they make an attempt at giving a depiction as to how the North fought. Gives insight into one of few fighting forces that took on (and beat) the most advanced fighting force in the world at the time. And by beat I mean obtaining their ultimate goal, I'm fully aware that the US was overwhelmingly more combat effective in the numbers game in Vietnam of course.

In fact, the campaign in the "valley of death" as the US called it, the US troops had to withdraw with helicopter and artillery support to be able to withdraw, not the US military counterattack successfully as in movie.
